Everglades, the Wildlife Attraction of South Florida

The subtropical everglades environment is the perfect setting for thousands of different animals and plants. Birds of all kinds call the Everglades home including the wood stork, the great white heron, and the snail kite (a bird that is hard to spot elsewhere). In addition to many unique bird and plant species, the Everglades are famous for its population of Florida panthers. Even though these panthers are scarce, visitors to the Everglades will catch a glimpse of Florida panthers in their natural habitat.

Wildlife AttractionAdventure lovers will be thrilled to learn that many American alligators lurk beneath the surface of the everglade’s waters. These alligators are easy to spot when you traverse the Everglades with a seasoned guide. The Everglades are filled with so many species that it’s hard to name them all, but you can count on viewing many interesting creatures during your next Everglades trip.

Talking Numbers: Everglade Species Stats

Not only is the Everglades home to many different species, it is the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere. Here are some statistics about the Everglades that you may find interesting:

  • 40 different mammal species live in the Everglades.
  • 50 unique reptiles call the Everglades home.
  • More than 300 fish swim in the Everglade waters!
  • Everglades National Park stretches across 1,509,000 acres.

With so much land and so many different fish, reptiles, and mammals to see, there’s plenty about the Everglades waiting to be discovered. You might even come across a giant snake trying to swallow an alligator!

A Peculiar Python Tale

Burmese pythons slither and slide their way through the Everglades every day. These massive creatures are the natural predators of many different mammals and birds. Some very large pythons can even consume small dogs, pigs, and other animals. Needless to say, pythons are confident creatures that will try to destroy most things in their paths.
A few years ago, a particularly confident Everglade python attempted to swallow an alligator. While courageous, the python in question didn’t live to tell the tale (if pythons could talk, that is). Instead, this python literally split in half! As it turns out, pythons can’t swallow everything!
